Mission and History
|
MusicWorks in the Berkshires, Inc. formerly the Richmond Performance Series was founded as a non-profit, community-based organization in 1985.
Since our inception, we have presented over 100 concerts featuring the Hawthorne String Quartet, Guests Artists such as Christopher Hogwood, Phyllis Curtin, Anthony Fogg, Tamara Smirnova, Lukas Foss, Burton Fine, Thomas Martin and James Sommerville and the music of classical music’s greatest composers.
We have premiered many new works and MusicWorks’ commissions. We have explored the pleasures of thematic programming including newly discovered compositions of the Holocaust, the music of “French Impressions”, and the delights of “Under the Tuscan Sun.”
MusicWorks also has provided in-school artist residencies, family concerts, and maintains a flourishing relationship with the Berkshire Music School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
The mission of MusicWorks is to offer world-class chamber music performance and community education by exploring a diverse musical repertoire, supporting music education and appreciation, and fostering an up-close personal relationship between performer and audience.
MusicWorks is increasingly collaborating with Berkshires organizations such as the Berkshire Institute for Lifetime Learning, our area FM classical music station, WMHT, and Simons Rock College in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to extend our reach to new audiences. In addition, we have partnered with local inns and restaurants to offer our concertgoers the best in hospitality that the Berkshires has to offer.
